Harrie accepted Richard’s kiss, and the flowers, distractedly, all too aware of Quinn seated in the room behind her.

She’d spent the most miserable day on her own yesterday, her thoughts alternating between an unwanted belief in Quinn and her father’s accusations concerning Richard, and then instantly contradicting those thoughts by recalling Richard’s warmth and charm when the two of them were together, sure that her companion of the last few months couldn’t possibly be guilty of the things he was accused of.

And that certainly had been endorsed by Richard himself when he’d telephoned her in the afternoon to see if she was feeling any better, his concern as to her well-being obviously genuine as he’d told her not to give this evening’s literary dinner another thought, just to get herself well. But Harrie had assured him she was only feeling slightly under the weather, that she was sure she would be well enough to go to the dinner with him the following evening.

It had served her right when she’d woken this morning with a raging headache, and a sore throat to go with it, but at least the call in sick she had made to her father had been completely genuine!

She hadn’t even seen the newspaper until her return from the chemist after picking up her prescription, but the article on Corinne Westley had done nothing to improve the way she felt.

Although looking at Richard now, his smile warm with concern as he gazed down at her, Harrie couldn’t see that he had been in the least affected by that same article.

Well, of course he wasn’t, she instantly berated herself; Quinn was mistaken in his accusations towards Richard, and her father was just going along with them because Richard wasn’t a man of his own choosing for his eldest daughter!

‘They’re beautiful, Richard, thank you.’ She buried her face in the fragrant blooms he had just given her—the first flowers he’d ever given her, in fact.

‘You’re more than welcome,’ he assured her huskily. ‘But I have to say their beauty can in no way compare to yours,’ he added warmly.

Harrie’s smile of pleasure was arrested on her lips as she heard the strangulated sound coming from the room behind her. Quinn! And the noise he’d made sounded distinctly like a muffled laugh to her!

‘I have a visitor, Richard,’ she told him stiltedly—before they gave Quinn anything else to laugh at! ‘He was just about to leave,’ she added for Quinn’s benefit. ‘But come and be introduced, anyway.’ She linked her hand lightly with his as she led the way back into the sitting-room.

Quinn had stood up since she’d left the room, his expression guarded as he looked across at the man at her side. Given the circumstances of how Quinn had told her he felt towards Richard, Harrie supposed she should feel grateful for the fact that he hadn’t immediately crossed the room and punched Richard in the face!

But, of course, they were all civilised people—weren’t they…?
